Legal Writing Tips for Advanced Practitioners

Society and the law have undergone drastic change over the last few decades, not to mention generations. So why do many attorneys continue to write like Judge Learned Hand is still on the bench?

In this course Alisa Shorago discusses writing traps that can befall the seasoned practitioner: the hazards of knowing too much, as well as using an ingrained writing style despite changes in style via the plain language movement. She provides techniques and tips to avoid these hazards and to help you write more readable and persuasive legal documents. The main topics addressed include getting around knowing too much; using authority effectively; increasing conciseness and clarity; and organizing and designing for readability. Further points addressed include the importance of readability, using overviews, avoiding long sentences, and the use of white space.

Alisa is an accomplished trainer and facilitator, specializing in legal and business writing, as well as sexual harassment prevention. She has practiced law for over 15 years with a focus on litigation and has clerked for state appellate and federal trial courts.
